Home/Sagrantino
Montefalco · Umbria
One of the most tannic grapes grown anywhere in the world, Sagrantino ripens on a handful of hillsides around Montefalco and almost nowhere else. Deep garnet in colour, its bouquet runs dark — cherry, plum, cinnamon, earth — and the tannins that make it forbidding young are exactly what let it age for decades.
If you're a wine enthusiast looking to expand your palate, Sagrantino is a grape worth seeking out. It's grown almost exclusively around Montefalco, and it carries some of the highest tannin levels of any grape variety in the world — which makes the wines robust and dry when young, and gives them real ability to age.
In the glass, expect a deep garnet colour and a bouquet of dark, brooding red fruit — cherry, plum, cinnamon, and an undertow of earthiness. On the palate: black cherry, morello cherry and plum, held together by firm tannins and bright acidity. Given time, oak, vanilla and spice start to layer in on top.
